Excelsa
This speciality coffee was grown by smallholder farmers in the lush greenbelt of South Sudan, East Africa. Here, the rich soils and hot, wet climate are ideal for growing indigenous Excelsa coffee, and years of natural cross-pollination have developed its distinctive taste profile.Coffee-drinking has long been part of South Sudanese culture but commercial coffee farms were abandoned when war broke out in 1984 and since then expertise has been lost. In 2020, a sustainable forestry company spotted the potential to revive South Sudan’s lost coffee industry. They provided local farmers with training, seedlings and introductions to international coffee buyers. An exciting new coffee hit the market.
More than 1000 farmers now cultivate Excelsa coffee bushes in Western Equatoria State. It is the first high-value export crop they have ever produced and the impact on their lives is huge. They each have on average seven children and will use their coffee profits to pay school fees, and build proper housing.
Nearly four decades later, fighting continues across South Sudan. But where there is work, there is peace. Thanks to Excelsa coffee bushes the forests of Western Equatoria State are free of violence. As coffee-lovers worldwide discover the unique Excelsa taste, we hope South Sudan can realise its potential as a major speciality coffee producer, creating jobs and peace in this beautiful country.
